A leveling staff is a straight rectangular rod having graduations the foot of the staff representing zero reading. The purpose of a level is to establish a horizontal line of sight the purpose of the leveling staff is to determine the amount by which the station is above or below the line of sight leveling staves may be divided into two classes.
Self reading:-A self reading staff is the one which can be read directly by the instrument man through the telescope
Target staff: – A target staff on the other hand contains a moving target which the reading is taken by staff man

Top of lines are even hundredths
Top of major tick lines are exactly a tenth of a foot
Smaller black numbers are tenths of a foot
Bottom of lines are odd hundredths
Large red numbers are whole feet
Top of large tick next to red number is whole foot

Technical Specification:-
The elevation of change point elevation of P + back sight at P – fore sight at change point (C.P)
The second height of the instrument the elevation of change point + back sight at change point
The elevation of Q the second height of instrument – foresight at Q
Every meter length is divided in to 200 divisions
The division is painted in black and white alternately of thickness 5 mm each
The graduation figures are marked at every decimeter length
The number indicating meter is in red and the decimeter number is in black
A graduation figure of 24 indicates 2 meters and 4 decimeters
The graduation are made continuously one above the other in the same line
The division lines should be parallel to the base of the bottom shoe and perpendicular to the length of the staff
The edges of the division lines should be straight sharply defined
They should be clear and made distinctly visible by properly contrasting
The graduation color paints used should not crack or blister when exposed to adverse or atmospheric conditions
